Osteopathy

What does an osteopath do?
An osteopath specializes in how all the different parts of your body work and affect each other. It's all connected, and osteopathic treatment can examine and heal that connection. We look at bones, joints, connective tissue, muscles, organs and the nervous system, which is why this type of treatment is particularly effective and good for many people.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy has been approved by the Danish healthcare system on an equal footing with physiotherapy and chiropractic since June 2018. This means that our title is protected and we have our place in the healthcare system in Denmark. Osteopathy has been around for more than 125 years in the U.S. and has been growing ever since.
The education takes four years and is based on traditional health science subjects such as anatomy, neurology, physiology and pathologies or biomechanics.
We work systematically, scientifically and sensitively to make a correct diagnosis and find the right course of treatment for you. With osteopathy, you will try to restore a balance in the body so that it has the opportunity to function optimally again and that it has the capacity to heal itself.
We started our education as physiotherapists, and we still use the best we got from this education in our daily work. Afterwards, we completed a Master Degree in Osteopathy. This makes us particularly skilled at manual treatment and provides a higher understanding of how the body’s various systems interact. The big difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy is that osteopathic treatment does not only consider the affected part, but the whole body because all structures affect each other.
To reduce the effects of stress, the osteopath can advise on lifestyle changes, appropriate physical activity and referrals to other specialists such as psychologists and nutritionists. A holistic approach is essential for effective stress management. So whether it is physical or mental pain, our skilled osteopaths in the clinic in Nørrebro or Amager will be able to help you in the right direction to a body and mind in balance.
You do not need a referral from a doctor to have your consultation with an osteopath.

First consultation – What can I expect?
For your first treatment ( approx. 60 min) the osteopath will first ask questions about your issue and you health history.
Afterwards we will proceed with a physical examination, that consist of light pressure and mobilization of your body that will help us to find the cause the pain provoking structure, make a diagnosis, and then proceed with the treatment. For the first consultation most of the time will be spent finding the causes of your problems through questions and examination, therefore sometimes the actual treatment will be shorter.
Treatment plan with an osteopath
After the first consultation where we have made our diagnosis and we have found the cause of your pain, a treatment plan will begin. A typical osteopathic plan will extend between 4-6 treatments unless it is a “chronic” problem. If there are blocks, restrictions, or tension somewhere in the body, this could affect our circulation, nervous system, and our musculoskeletal system. Often our patients will find that the cause of their pain or symptom is not where the pain or symptom is experienced.

Course of treatment with us
After the first consultation where we have made our diagnosis and found the cause of your pain, a course of treatment will begin. A typical course of treatment with an osteopath at OsteoMedica in Nørrebro will last between 4-6 treatments, unless it is a “chronic” problem. If there are blockages in the form of locks, restrictions or tension in some parts of the body, this can affect our circulation, nervous system and musculoskeletal system. What distinguishes an osteopath from a chiropractor?
Both osteopaths and chiropractors possess skills in manipulative techniques that aim to improve body movement and relieve pain and discomfort. These techniques focus on loosening and adjusting joints to promote better function and comfort for the individual.
Nevertheless, osteopathy differs by taking a broader approach to treatment. In addition to addressing specific joint problems, osteopathic practice prioritizes the holistic understanding of the body as a cohesive unit. This implies a treatment approach that extends beyond just manipulation of the joints.
Osteopaths don't just focus on the isolated part where the pain is experienced, but look at the whole body to understand and address the underlying causes of pain or discomfort. This includes the use of various techniques such as stretching, gentle pressure, deep relaxation and craniosacral therapy, which aim to improve the overall physiological and structural condition of the client.
The broader approach in osteopathy aims not only to treat the symptoms, but works to restore the body's balance and support its natural healing processes. This involves promoting a deeper understanding of the body's interactions and reactions, allowing for a more comprehensive and integrated approach to treatment.
